Use ribbons to turn old bedlinen into a decorative top sheet
Time taken and skills needed: one-and-a-half hours, easy to do.
What you'll need
● An old flat sheet
● Ribbon and trimmings
● Sewing machine
● Cotton thread
● Scissors
● Pins
Before you begin
Check that your ribbon is washable and the colour won't bleed. If you don't have an old flat sheet, try sewing a pattern onto a duvet cover or pillowcase. The ribbons used above cost from as little as £3 a roll at John Lewis.
How it's done
Cut lengths of ribbon to the width of the sheet, allowing an extra 2cm on each side to fold over.
Pin the broadest ribbon into place and sew along both sides to secure it.
Next, place and pin the more narrow pieces of ribbon on top and sew a single line of stitching down the middle.
Leaving enough space for a more decorative ribbon, repeat the process to create another stripe below to match the first.
Finally, pin and sew the decorative ribbon or trimming in the space between the two stripes.
