This throw is a re-working of a classic design and, because each star is stitched to an individual square, the finished size can be as large or small as you wish.

1 Using the star-point template (below), cut out a star point from a piece of thin white card.
2 Take four 25cm x 20cm sections of different fabrics and, using the template, cut eight star points, two from each fabric.
3 Mark two dots at the top corners on the seam line of all the patches (ill. 1). Arrange eight points in a star shape. With right sides facing, pin the first two together along one long edge. Machine-stitch to the dot, then work a few backwards stitches to secure. Add the other six patches in this way, then join the first and last together to make a star.
4 Press all the seams open and press back a 6mm turning along each outer edge (ill. 2).
5 Cut a 45cm-square piece of white cotton and neaten the edge with an overlocking or zigzag stitch. Press it in half, then half again to mark it into quarters. Pin the star to the square, lining the points up with the creases (ill. 3). Sew in place by hand or with a narrow machine buttonhole or zigzag stitch.
6 Using the octagon template (below), trace the outline onto the paper side of a 10cm-square piece of bonding web. Iron it to the back of a 10cm-square of darker fabric and cut out. Peel off the backing paper, press the patch in the centre of the star and then machine stitch around the edge (ill. 4). Make up all the squares in this way (20 squares in four rows of five makes a 180cm x 220cm throw).
7 Lay out the squares and, with right sides facing, join them in horizontal rows with a 1cm seam. Press all the seams open.
8 With right sides facing, pin two rows together along one long edge, matching the seams. Machine-stitch and press the seam open. Add the other rows in this way (ill. 5).
9 For the binding, make an 8cm-wide strip of printed fabric that is 10cm longer than the sum of all four sides (join strips with a 6mm seam and press open). Press under a 1cm turning on one long edge of the binding strip. With right sides facing and raw edges matching, pin it along the top edge of the throw, trimming the ends in line with the fabric. Machine-stitch, then turn the folded edge over the back. Pin it so the fold lies 3mm beyond the stitch line (ill. 6). Machinestitch in place from the front, sewing along the seam line between the throw and the binding and then bind the bottom edge.
10 Bind the side edges by folding under 1cm at each end of the fabric strip, then pin it so that the folds project 1mm beyond the edges. Machine-stitch and fold over as before, then stitch down from the front. Slip-stitch the edges of the folds (ill. 7).
