Hallways used not to be complete without coat hooks, a hat- and umbrella-stand, mirror and place for gloves. Adding this hanging storage for winter accessories frees up valuable peg space for jackets. Use it near an entrance (as pictured), attach it to the back of a door or make one in linen for a bathroom or bedroom.

You will need

● fabric: 90cm x 40cm for the back, 50cm x 36cm for the pouch, 35cm x 7cm for the band
● tape measure
● pins
● scissors
● iron
● tailors’ chalk or water-soluble sewing pen
● sewing machine
● thread two 10cm-long ribbons to make the ties

1 Turn over a 1cm hem around each piece of fabric. Iron flat, then pin. Reduce corner bulk by snipping off just over 1cm from each point. Sew the hems, removing the pins as you go.

2 Take the pouch fabric and line up one short side on the right-hand side at the bottom of the backing fabric so the two right sides face up. Pin in place and stitch the right-hand seam, removing the pins. Over-sew several times at the top (seams need to be strong here).

3 Repeat the process on the left side of the bag. The fabric should not sit tightly across.

4 Flatten the pouch evenly (fabric will hang over the side seams). Iron, then pinch the extra material inwards, creating a V-shape or concertina effect. Pin it down on each side and sew along the bottom, through these folded side seams, to create a pouch.

5 Hand- or machine-stitch through the folded V-shape seam at the sides, just at the top, to prevent it falling open when filled, ensuring the main body of the pouch isn’t restricted.

6 To create the flap, lift and fold the backing fabric towards you, about 15cm above the opening of the pouch, so the reverse sides of this section meet. Press, pin and sew down each side of the flap, then across the width of the backing fabric, to close the flap.

7 To attach the band, measure 15cm from the top seam down and 2.5cm in from each side. Pin the hemmed strip in place at each end and in the middle. Stitch across at these points.

8 Sew ribbon loops to the top for hanging.
