Make a lined basket

Lined Easter basket by Sarah Moore

You will need:

• Basket
• Soapy water
• Square or circle of fabric, about twice the size of the basket base
• Tailors’ chalk
• Needle and thread
• Scissors or pinking shears
• Ribbon, to decorate (optional)

Instructions

Remove any plastic lining from your basket, then clean with soapy water and leave to dry.

You don’t need a pattern to cut your fabric, as you can trim any excess after it is in place. Fold the material in half, then quarters, to find the centre point. Mark this with an ‘x’ using tailors’ chalk. Open the fabric out and place the ‘x’ onto the middle of the basket base.

Push the material into every corner of the basket, then up the sides. When it is evenly distributed, sew all the way round through the woven sides, just beneath the rim – this can be fiddly because you’ll need to push the needle in and out of the weave of the basket.

Trim the fabric so it is level with the rim of the basket, being careful not to snip any of the stitches you have made. Use pinking shears to create a crinkly edge and tie ribbon in a bow around the handle for a finishing touch.
