Materials
• 1.9m of 115cm-wide fabric
• 10cm of 4cm-wide grosgrain ribbon
• Threads to match fabric and ribbon

How to make
Cut a front and back panel, each 50cm x 93cm; two side panels, each 13cm x 93cm; one base, 13cm x 50cm; two 5cm x 175cm strips for drawstrings; and one 5cm x 36cm strip for hanging loop.

Fold one drawstring strip in half lengthways with the wrong sides together and press. Open out, fold 12mm toward the centre along each long edge and press. Refold along centre and press. Topstitch close to long edge. Repeat for second drawstring and hanging loop.

With right sides together, pin the long edge of the front panel to the long edge of one side panel. Mark an opening from 60cm to 65cm from the bottom edge. Starting 1cm from the bottom edge and leaving a 1cm seam allowance, stitch the panels together to the top edge, leaving the 5cm open where marked. Stitch the other side panel to the front and the back panel to the side panels in the same way. Stitch on the base panel, leaving a 1cm seam allowance. Press all seams open.

Turn 1cm to the wrong side around the top, press, pin and topstitch. Fold 17cm to the wrong side around top. Press and tack. Stitch all around the bag, 10cm from the upper folded edge. Work another line of stitching 5cm below this – aligning these two lines with the top and bottom of the 5cm opening, for the drawstrings.

Use a large safety pin to thread one drawstring through the channel. Repeat with second drawstring, starting at the other opening. Knot ends.

Fold the hanging loop in half and pin the ends side by side to the centre back, with the raw edges about 7.5cm from the top of the bag. Cut a 8cm length of 4cm-wide ribbon, fold in the raw edges to form a 4cm square, and pin over the ends of the hanging loop. Stitch all around the square, then stitch an ‘X’ from corner to corner for strength.
