Enlarge stocking template (below) by 800 per cent. Cut out two stocking pieces from fabric, a rectangle 40cm x 26cm for contrast band, if required, and a strip 25cm x 5cm for hanging loop.

Using template, cut out two stocking pieces from fabric and one strip 20cm x 4cm for hanging loop. With right sides together, pin and stitch the stockings together around outer curved edge, taking 1cm seam allowances. Neaten  seam allowances. Turn right side out and press. Neaten top edge, then press under 2cm hem around and stitch. Press under 1cm on both long edges of hanging loop. Press in half and stitch. Fold in half to make a loop and stitch inside back edge of stocking.

To make contrast band, pin and stitch shorter edge of band together. Press seam allowances open. Fold band in half. Pin and stitch to wrong side of stocking top. Neaten seam allowances. Fold band onto right side. Alternatively, trim top of stocking with pompom braid.
