Make bunting from fabric scraps: free sewing pattern
Give scraps of lace, trimmings, embroidered cloths and fabric remnants a new lease of life as pretty bunting. By Sarah Moore
Old lace, trimmings, embroidered cloths and fabric remnants can be given a new lease of life as pretty bunting. Simply cut into tiny triangles, as I have here, and attach to ribbon. Choose finer pieces, and don't hem the edges, for a fluttery finish.
You will need
● tape measure
● pieces of fabric
● paper template, 12cm on the two long sides and 8cm on the short
● ruler and tailors’ chalk
● plain scissors or pinking shears
● length of woven tape or ribbon
● sewing machine
Instructions
1 Decide how long you’d like your bunting to be and calculate how many triangles you’ll need to make, then draw around the template onto your materials, this number of times, using a ruler and tailors’ chalk. Cut out with scissors, pinking shears or a mix.
2 Measure and snip woven tape or ribbon to your desired length. At one end, fold the material to create a loop and stitch in place.
3 Put the ribbon under the machine foot and position the short side of your triangle so it covers most of the back of the ribbon – make sure the fabrics are good-sides down. Sew down the centre of the ribbon and repeat the process with another triangle, leaving a 1cm gap, until all are attached.
4 To finish, make a loop with the ribbon at the other end and sew in place.
