22 sts and 30 rows to 10cm/4in square over st st using 4mm (US 6) needles

The pattern

Using 3.25mm (US 3) needles and yarn A, cast on 127 sts.

Row 1: k1, *p1, k1, rep from * to end.

Row 2: p1, *k1, p1, rep from * to end.

These 2 rows set the 1 x 1 rib. Cont in rib for 6 more rows, ending with RS facing for next row.

Change to 4mm (US 6) needles.

Row 1: k63 in yarn A, join yarn C, k1, change back to yarn A, k63. This completes row 1 of the chart (click here to see the chart), with the single yarn-C stitch marking the central stitch on the chart (and the centre-front of the hat).

Starting with a p row, working in st st, using the intarsia technique and yarns A, B and C, continue to follow the chart until all 28 rows have been completed. (Note that odd numbered rows should be knitted and even numbered rows should be purled.) End with RS facing for next row. Break off yarns B and C. Using yarn A, continue straight in st st until work measures 21cm/8½in.

Cast off.

Making up:

Weave in all ends. Sew together the side edges of the hat using mattress stitch. This seam marks the centre-back of the hat.

Ensuring the seam is centred, sew along the cast off edge at the top of the hat using mattress stitch.

Sew a button in the centre of each yarn-C circle to form the eyes.
