Create a dip-dye T-shirt

Dip-dye top

We used a T-shirt from Next and Dylon Fabric Dye For Hand Use (£3.49, www.dylon.co.uk). Follow the instructions on the packet to mix up the dye. You will also need salt to fix the colour.

Choose a 100 per cent cotton T-shirt. Wash to remove any finishes that might resist dye. Leave it damp.

Prepare the hand dye in a plastic bucket according to the pack instructions.

Roll the sleeves and top of T-shirt around a pole (as shown in illustration) to keep them out of dye.

To achieve ombre effect, dip the bottom half of the T-shirt into the bucket of dye and quickly pull it out a little way.

Gradually pull the T-shirt out of the dye, little by little. When complete, rinse, wash and dry before repeating the same process for the sleeves.

Tip Drip-dry dyed items outdoors, if possible. If drying indoors, place a protective sheet on the floor.
