You will need

● 2 rectangles of fabric measuring 30cm x 40cm
● 1 rectangle of contrast fabric measuring 20cm x 12cm
● 1.6m piping cord, cut in half
● 65cm cotton tape 2cm wide, cut in half
● Name-tag label

How to make

For the labelled-pocket bag, topstitch the name label to the centre of the contrasting fabric rectangle. Turn under all four edges of this contrasting fabric piece by 0.5cm and stitch in place. Now stitch the pocket along the sides and bottom to the centre front of the bag using a machine.

For the initial bag, print out a large letter and enlarge to the desired size. Use as a template to cut the eotter out of the contrasting fabric. Zigzag-stitch the fabric letter to the centre front of the bag using a machine.

To make the bag, take the two large fabric pieces. With right sides facing, take a 1cm seam allowance, and stitch the front to the back on three sides, leaving the top section open. Snip the corners of the fabric. Turn the right way out.

Make a turning of 2cm at the bag top by folding the fabric twice to the inside of the fabric to hide the raw edges, and iron flat. Topstitch in place using a sewing machine.

Fold the raw ends of the cotton tape to the inside by 1cm and topstitch in place. Topstitch the two lengths of casing to the top of the bag approx 2.5cm from the top edge, stitching along both top and bottom of the tape. Leave the sides open to insert the piping cord.

Cut the piping cord in half. Thread one half through the opening on one side and out of the same side. You can use a safety pin to help move it along. Tie the ends of the cord in a knot. Do the same with the other length of cord on the other side.
