Make cosy wrist warmers

CL nov12 make wristwarmers designed by Sarah Moore

Country Living has teamed up with designer Sarah Moore to bring you a series of step-by-step inspiring craft creations.

'Old jumpers or cardigans – especially cashmere ones – are ideal for creating these cosy accessories. To reclaim the fabric, snip along the garment seams – you may need to use the sleeves as well as the front and back of the jumper.'

You will need

● sheet of paper and pencil for the pattern
● scissors, pins, sewing machine
● knitted woollen jumper or cardigan
● tailors’ chalk or water-soluble sewing pen
● buttons or trimmings (optional)

1 Start by tracing the shape of your wrist onto paper, working along the edge of your palm up to the tip of your elbow. Add ½cm all the way round and cut out the pattern.

2 Fold the thumb section over towards the back of the hand and cut it off.

3 You will need to use the welt of the jumper as the hem of your warmers, so place the main pattern and the end of the thumb pattern right up against it. Chalk around both of these shapes twice, then turn them over and repeat the process to give you a front and back for each warmer (you should have eight shapes to cut out). Leave a 1cm margin outside the sewing line on the sides without welts and cut out the pieces.

4 Lay the main segments out and place the thumb ones next to them in the right position.

5 To sew the thumb onto each front and back, with right sides facing, use straight stitches along the sewing line to go around the outline. Repeat for the other warmer.

6 Press well with a cool iron, spreading the seams flat on the back.

7 Place the main pieces right sides together and secure with pins. Straight stitch along both sides of the warmer, being careful not to sew across the thumb opening.

8 Trim off any excess fabric from the seams and turn them the right way out.

9 Decorate with a couple of buttons.
