Make a holly leaf hair clip or brooch

You will need…

● Half a square of dark green felt -
● Scraps of red felt
● One 4cm snap hairclip
● One brooch pin
● Matching sewing threads
 
This makes a combined hairclip and brooch. If you want to make a brooch only, miss out the section ‘Inserting the hairclip’.

To make

Cutting out
Cut two big holly leaves and two smaller holly leaves from green felt (image 1 and holly hair clip pattern). 

Cut 4 small circles from red felt, for the berries.

Inserting the hairclip
In one of the large holly leaves cut a small slit approximately 2cm away from the bottom (see image 2). Snap open the hair clip and insert the back through the slit (image 3).

Take the other large felt holly leaf and place this on top of the other big holly leaf so that the top of the hair clip is sandwiched in between the leaves.

Start sewing
Stitch the large holly leaf felt pieces together around the edges (image 4). With small stitches, stitch a spine and veins on the leaf.

Take the two smaller felt leaves, and stitch the edges the spine and veins (image 5).

Stitch the two holly leaves together at the bottom.

Sewing the berries
Take two felt berry pieces and sew them around the edge. Stitch into place. Repeat with the other berry pieces (image 6).

Sewing the brooch pin
Turn your holly leaves over so the back is uppermost.

Take your brooch pin and insert a small square of felt between the pin and the back. Stitch this securely into place on the back of the brooch/hairclip (image 7).

Pin or clip into place.
