Sew a jersey tunic top: free sewing pattern
A scoop-bottomed, loose-fitting goes-with-everything top. By Suzanna Drew-Edwards
This casual, softly draped top is so versatile that you'll be wearing it with almost everything!
You will need
• 1.5m of fabric (we used a sturdy knitted jersey)
• Thread
• A jersey needle for your sewing machine
• Tunic template (see page 2)
How to make
Print out and enlarge the template on page 2. (You may need to use several pieces of paper and stick them together with sticky tape.)
Starting sewing
Pin the back, front and sleeve pieces on to the fabric, and cut out, making sure to lay the pattern pieces on the fold of the fabric.
Place the back and front right sides together and match the raw edges of the shoulder seams. Pin them into place and straight stitch 1cm from the edges. (image 1)
Sleeves: open out your tunic top and place it with right side facing upwards on a flat surface. Fold your sleeve in two and mark the centre point with a pin (image 2).
With right sides together, place a sleeve piece on the shoulder seam, matching the stitched shoulder seam and the centre of your sleeve piece (image 3).
Stitch. Repeat with the other sleeve.
Side seams: with right sides together, lay the tunic out on a flat surface. Match up the armhole seems at the armpit and pin from the sleeve cuff all the way down each side seam, finishing at the base of the tunic. Straight stitch 1cm from the edge (image 4).
Using a zigzag stitch, sew around the neck edge. Turn under by 1cm and straight stitch into place (image 5).
Turn the edges of the arm in by 1cm and stitch into place.
Leave the hem raw edged (or stitch if you prefer).
Throw it on, belt it up and swagger! You made it!
