Fancy publishing your book this weekend?

Just press upload and go for it!

What will you be doing this weekend? Cooking a fabulous Easter meal? Eating the best chocolate eggs? A little bit of bank holiday DIY perhaps? Or publishing your novel? The fact is, it's easier to put a book on Kindle now, than it is to bake hot cross buns. You upload it from a Word document and voilà - you're published! I know this because I put my novel up on Kindle two weeks ago. And if you're looking for wow factor this weekend, I heartily recommend self-publishing - it is an amazingly liberating experience.

I wrote my novel years ago when I was pregnant with daughter, who's now 15. Publishers loved it and were sure it would get snapped up but it didn't - and it sat under my bed in a box for all these years. Last summer I got a Kindle but I only thought about putting my novel on there when a friend suggested it. I don't know why it hadn't occurred to be before but suddenly I thought: why not? And then the reality of it kicked it in...

Confronted by the idea that anyone could read the thing, I took a good look at it and too out almost all of the smut! My husband then read it. Then I read it again. We printed out the terms and conditions, decided they were alright, got my son to design a cover on his ipad (this is optional - you can just have text) and then a few nights later I got myself a large glass of white wine and pressed 'upload'. Amazon say it takes 24 hours for it to appear but I got up the next morning, searched for myself in the Kindle shop and there I was - published!

Since then life hasn't changed in any obvious ways - but I feel different: I feel far, far more positive. Life said, 'No you can't publish your book' but the internet has come back and said, 'Yes you can!'. Friends are texting to say 'That's what you were writing all those years ago!'. They're loving it. And so am I. I have planted a seed and it is growing, just a little - I'll let you know how mine gets on. I know allaboutyou readers love to write. If you have a novel under the bed, why not get it out this weekend, take a look at it and put it on Kindle on Monday night? It'll be an Easter event to remember!
