And putting up a pricy temporary roof
COST SO FAR: WEEK SEVEN - £18,500
Cups of builders' tea: 55
Spoonfuls of sugar: 95
Were changing a three-bedroom house into a four-bedroom with an extra bathroom and a big square landing.
Take a quick look around our house - and see our plans. Here's how we got on this week...
Despite the work going on at the house, we took the opportunity to slip away and have a holiday with the kids at half term. Whilst away texts from friends started arriving - so we knew the temporary roof that was going up was big, but it wasnt until we pulled up on the drive we realised just how big. You could literally fit our whole house inside it three times over. Its quite impressive. The plastic is stretched like cling film over the scaffold before being heated with a blowtorch. The heat makes it shrink and tighten so I am told you can walk across it, which I won't be putting to the test!
The week it went up the weather was fantastic, so there was some debate as to whether the £6k cost was well spent. But for the last two weeks its been worth every penny as the builders have been able to carry on working despite hail, thunder, lightening and torrential rain.
This week we packed up for good and have now de-camped to my Mum's house. Our builder Steve told us that he can complete the extension at least 20% faster if we dont live there. Our belongings are in storage but we're spending nothing on rent and we get our laundry done.
Next job: decide on the bi-fold doors and order the windows. Should we opt for the white or grey powder-coated aluminium?
