My version of the tin-can garden lantern project

I couldn't resist making it...

by Adrienne Wyper

'Why is there a can of water in the freezer?' asked my partner.

So I showed him: 'I'm making this tin-can lantern,' I said.

And about two weeks later, I got round to it. It's so easy: fill a clean, empty can with water and freeze. Then bang holes in the side, in a pattern of your choosing, to let the light out. You might want to wear gloves for this bit, because gripping the nail (I actually used a screw) hard enough to stop it slipping on the can's side, can hurt after a while.

Put a lit tealight in the bottom, wait for twilight, and admire your handiwork. I haven't quite got round to making the beaded handle - I couldn't find a bit of wire to use, but I have the holes ready

And if you're keen to save your cans (and bottles and jars) from the recycling, try these ideas for upcycling them
