Our extension cost: the tears have started

Red pens and schedules

by Lauren Floodgate

COST SO FAR: WEEK TWO - £3925.00

Cups of builders' tea: 18
Spoonfuls of sugar: 22

We’re changing a three-bedroom house into a four-bedroom with an extra bathroom and a big square landing.
Take a quick look around our house - and see our plans. Here's how we got on this week...

I didn’t think the tears would start this early on but this week I had to sit down and have a good weep. We’ve picked our builder, a lovely chap called Steve and we have a start date of March. But with the start date came the schedule.

I’ve been merrily bobbing along putting off making decisions about kitchens and bathrooms but now I realize I should have been thinking about what goes inside from day one. The schedule is punishing and I have never felt under so much pressure to actually spend some money.

My lovely husband has taken the schedule and converted it into a spreadsheet. He has very usefully marked in red all the dates that I need to meet – there’s the get the windows bought by date, and the get the kitchen on-site date and the have you decided what the bathrooms should look like date because the tiles are due to be put up date?

So it was off to Smiths and £23 later I was tearing pages out of magazines and making myself a moodboard. Do you like it? This is what my dreamy new kitchen might look like – that is if hubby puts down the red pen for long enough to earn some money to pay for the kitchen in time date!
