Maybe polar bears don't matter but your kitchen does,
Recently there have been so many media arguments about potential eco disaster, with some 'experts' saying we don't need to clean up our act as a planet. The idea is that polar bears are nice, but so were woolly mammoths, and we've got on just fine without them, haven't we? The planet is constantly evolving, so what are these whinging, miserable environmentalists on about?
Whatever the intentions of these 'experts', the fact is, we do have a problem: we produce too much waste. It's ugly and it will only get worse if we don't address it. And yet life is so fast and furious that it can feel as if we're powerless to do anything about it. But there was a woman on BBC Breakfast this morning who was seriously inspiring. Bea Johnson has written a book called Zero Waste Home, and she sat there with Charlie Stayt and Susanna Reid and with a small jar which she said contained one year's worth of her family's waste!
Bea is not a mad eco-warrior - she is a chic French housewife who calmly and very stylishly explained some of the ways she keeps her waste to a limit. There was a clip of Bea Johnson in her kitchen - and it is so enviable. Just look at these clutter-free, shiny surfaces!
1) I am going to keep my baguettes in a pillowcase.
2) I am not going to buy vegetables wrapped in plastic anymore.
I think it's wrong for us to stand on this planet like belligerent children stamping our feet and saying, 'I can do what I like'. Instead we can take responsibility for the future of the planet and help avoid it running out of landfill sites. Our homes need decluttering now and then and the Earth is no different. We need to clean up our acts. And I think that if the public shows it wants less waste, governments will eventually join the fight, instead of fighting it.
Oh dear, did I just have an eco-rant? Well, a girl's got to treat herself sometimes. Feeling a bit eco warrior yourself? Check out Kim and Aggie's brilliant natural cleaning tips. Bea Johnson would approve of them.
