I recently picked up Virginia Woolfs To the Lighthouse again, for no other reason than it was like re-visiting an old friend in whose house I have spent many happy hours. This time, Im delighted to say, I even found a few new rooms there! Re-reading it 20 years on has made the stories it tells much more vivid and relevant to my life now. I happily hope to read it many more times to find something new, as I identify with different groups of characters from excitable teenagers to septuagenarians on their journey through life.

Saved up for afterwards I have a brand new Virginia Woolf biography by Alexandra Harris, which winds its way through Woolf's life and work in an easily digestible paperback. Nothing better than being inspired to revisit the books all over again.

Author Joanna Trollope is doing her own bit of revisiting this month shes rewritten Jane Austens Sense & Sensibility! Its a big brave move tackling the Austen. Much as I love PD James crime novels and have read every single one, I didnt like Death Comes to Pemberley at all James continuation of the Elizabeth Bennet/Mr Darcy story, a follow-up to Pride and Prejudice complete with grisly murder.

Extracts have been all over The Times, the dramatic new plot twist even made the front headline on Sunday. If you havent heard what it is and are hoping to read this book, I wont spoil it for you but basically dont leave the house or turn on a computer until youve got the novel in your hands to preserve the secret!
