Our extension cost: slow builders

Living in a box or shed?

by Lauren Floodgate

COST SO FAR: WEEK THREE - £3157.00

Cups of builders' tea: 14
Spoonfuls of sugar: 14

We’re changing a three-bedroom house into a four-bedroom with an extra bathroom and a big square landing.
Take a quick look around our house - and see our plans. Here's how we got on this week...

So, two out of five of our builders understand the meaning of the word deadline, what the others think this word means, I do not know. The question is do we take this lateness into consideration? I’m ready to strike them off but my husband has more patience and has extended the deadline by seven days.

I’m gagging at the bit to get going. I’ve ordered a mountain of boxes which I’m waiting to pack, I’ve sweet talked our wonderful neighbour into letting us stock pile our belongings in his spare room and I’m throwing out stuff with gay abandon. We’ve even built a shed base. With the garage being demolished we need a temporary store so we are buying a modest log cabin rather than a shed. This is the one we think we'll buy. I thought perhaps the kids could use it as a den one day – that or we’ll end up sleeping in it when the building schedule over runs.

It’s also dawned on me that the food mountain really needs to be addressed. We’ve two freezers stuffed to breaking point and the BOGOF cupboard (buy one get one free) really needs to be emptied. I’m starting to feel overwhelmed at the prospect of emptying the house.

On a positive note the lab results have come back on our garage (which I blogged about last week) is made of asbestos cement, the easiest type of asbestos to dispose of. Phew!
