Philips RéAura: update
There's been a lot of interest in the revolutionary home-laser skin rejuvenation device from Philips, for more information - and to win one - see below. We thought you would be interested in the clinical studies carried out on this new device - proof that the claims made by Philips are backed up by the people who tested it. Good news if you are planning to part with £799 to try it yourself!

Clinical tests for Philips RéAura recruited 80 testers, aged from 34 to 65, with mild to moderate lines and wrinkles. Each tester used it twice weekly for 8 to 12 weeks. Results were obtained by clinical evaluation, investigative scoring and self assessment, and the device was tested on face, neck, hands, arms and chest.

Just under half of the testers noticed a difference in their skinin one week, 70% noticed a difference in two weeks, 85% after one month and 95% after 8 weeks. The following results were recorded at the end of the test; improvement in lines around the eyes and mouth, reduction in pigmentation on cheeks and hands, improvement in skin texture and radiance. Overall 81% of testers agreed it reduced fine lines, 83% said it evened out skin tone and 86% said it smoothed skin texture.

Philips RéAura costs £799 and is available exclusively from SpaceNK. For more information visit www.philips.co.uk/reaura.

Philips RéAura launches

We’re all quite familiar with lasers these days – lasers for hair renewal, eyesight correction and skin rejuvenation. Laser hair removal technology has progressed so far there are now systems available for use at home; for skin rejuvenation and the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles however it has been necessary to visit a clinic. Until now.

Philips RéAura laser skin rejuvenation is the first of its kind on the market. Developed to even skin tone, smooth skin texture and reduce fine lines on face, neck, chest, hands and forearms, it has taken laser technology from the leading professional laser company Fraxel® and packaged it for home use.

Endorsement

Leading London dermatologist Dr Sam Bunting has endorsed the product and, she put it, ‘I wasn’t going to put my name to anything I didn’t feel was going to show results.’ She explained the science behind it to me.

During treatment, the laser beams pass into the epidermis and dermis deep in the skin, where creams cannot reach, triggering a natural process of cell renewal. Old and damaged cells are replaced with new cells containing more collagen (the fibre that gives skin firmness and smoothness). Repeated treatments boost collagen production, making skin appear smoother and less lined. Pigmentation is reduced as old cells are pushed out of the skin to give a more even appearance.

For best results she advises using the device twice a week; you should see an increase in skin radiance quite quickly, however it will take a while longer for the skin to produce enough collagen to reduce fine lines and wrinkles – between 8 and 12 weeks is the optimum time. ‘It’s important to use it regularly,’ she stresses. ‘You will see results if you do this.’

Trying it at home

Before buying the device, intending purchasers must fill out a detailed questionnaire to answer questions about skin type and lifestyle. This is reassuring – Philips will not sell this device to anyone whose skin may be unsuitable for laser treatment. The consultation also prepares you for realistic results and explains what you can expect to achieve. After all, you are working with a natural entity, your skin – this is not plastic surgery.

The device looks a bit like a large Philips Ladyshave and needs to be charged before use, one charge should be enough for two sessions. The laser is activated when the device is held against the skin at a 90 degree angle – a red light on the device indicates the laser has made correct contact, the light turns green when the laser activates and there will be a quick heat flash. Then it’s just a matter of moving the device over the skin until it beeps, letting you know you've done enough work on one area, time to move on to the next.

And remember, the skin will be quite red afterwards for up to 12 hours - so don't do it just before you go out!
