Fashion we love for autumn: Ava by Marisota

New season buys specially designed for larger figures

by Bernadette Fallon

At the recent press do to launch the Marisota Ava collection for autumn winter 2013, one item stole the show – this rather lovely pink collarless coat, for the show-stealing price of £49. Pretty much everybody tried it on and had themselves photographed in it within minutes of entering the room – if the general public’s reaction is anything similar, expect this one to be snapped up pretty quickly. Part of the 2013 craze for pink coats, this design is particularly slimming and easy to wear.

Call me contrary (!) – but my favourite wasn’t the pink coat, pretty though it is – I preferred this slightly more everyday navy pea coat, maybe I’m just not a pink coat sort of girl. While it’s suitable for everyday, the brass coloured buttons add a dressed-up detail and are also used to eye-catching effect on shoulders and sleeves.

This is TV stylist Mark Heyes’ first collection for Marisota though he will be familiar to many of you from his regular appearances on ITV’s Lorraine, sharing his fashion wisdom. Now you can have a piece of his wisdom hanging in your wardrobe! Watch him in action here.

Marisota understands the challenges women have finding flattering clothes as we age and our body shape changes - the brand specialises in larger size womenswear. Its Shapeology tool allows you to shop by body area – whether you have concerns about covering arms, tummy, bum or whatever – find out more here.

If you struggle finding comfortable-fit trousers, I’m reliably informed by those who tried them on, that these are among the best on the market. With stretchy fabric and an elasticated top, they will look good with a long tunic for daytime or dressed up with a sheer chiffon blouse in the evening. Print trousers £39, studded blouse £45

Peplum tops are a great figure-shaping buy – nipping in high on the waist to create a flattering line and flaring out over the tummy to disguise any lumps or bumps you might want to conceal. I saw several people try on this stylish geo print dress and, from size 12 to size 18, it looked good on them all. The pencil skirt creates a long slim line to elongate the lower body and ends flatteringly just on the knee. It costs £65 and was another big hit on the night.
