Liquid diet: one day to go

What you really should be aware of before starting to detox

by Bernadette Fallon

Surprisingly, once I'm back at work the lack of food is easier to cope with. Or maybe it's just the sheer joy at the thought I am less than 24 hours away from being able to eat. I have enjoyed the first six days of the detox (the 'eating days' as I like to fondly remember them) and I might just do the Mind & Body Cleanse on an annual basis, I'm also planning to incorporate some of the healthy eating habits into my post-detox life. But I have struggled through the last few days of juice only. And I'd like to point out a few things you really should consider before embarking on this diet:

1. Juicers are brilliant. But they just gobble up fruit and veg and give you a small glassful of juice in return. You wouldn't see a bag of apples after a day of juices, a head of broccoli is gone in two mashes, and I only just managed to stretch a big long cucumber to three pulps. You will spend a lot of money on fruit and vegetables in the course of this detox, particularly as you are advised to buy 'farm fresh' from a market or greengrocers. But then, what price a healthy body?

2. You should cancel as many social plans as you can over the 'power phase' when you're not eating. In particular do not plan to hang around places where there's food. You'll only feel miserable. And very hungry. Stay at home by the juicer is my advice. And don't turn on the TV. Saturday Morning Kitchen is likely to push you over the edge.

3. Try to avoid public transport or places where there are likely to be large numbers of tourists getting in your way during the power phase. You will just be tempted to start screaming very powerfully. I wouldn't recommend the cinema either. An hour into the self-indulgent drivel that was 'Tree of Life' and I wanted to slap director Terrence Malick very hard. Hunger and anger go hand in hand it seems.

4. Don't continue with the 'power phase' if you start to feel unwell, light-headed or faint. Have some food. Oh how I wanted to feel unwell, light-heated or faint ...
