On the way home last night I realised that my earrings (flat black plastic hoops) are 25 years old. And I started thinking about the other old favourites in my wardrobe...
Today I'm wearing a purple sunray-pleated skirt of indeterminable age. It came to me about 15 years ago from an older and wealthier relative (hello, Aunt Ella!) who used to send parcels of clothes to my mum and my aunts. How long she had it I don't know.
My OH (a sharp-dressed man) despairs of me sometimes, as I refuse to part with items from my wardrobe. I don't hold on to everything though - if I really won't wear it, I get rid of it. But for things I really like, I stay loyal. And I pine for items from my past wardrobe. I'm about to buy a red-and-white striped jumper partly because it really reminds me of something similar I loved when I was 13.
The oldest garment I own is a dark blue raw silk light coat, which I bought with a birthday fiver from my best friend (hello, Kerry!) from Camden Market on my 18th birthday. And it still sees the light of day - I'm planning to wear it to a wedding this summer.
