And so we come to the end ...

My detox diet is over. But would I do it again?

by Bernadette Fallon

Looking back over my detox diet diary for the past week and a half, a number of sentences strike me.

Preparation phase: 'I've been wary of detox diets ever since ending up in A&E while doing one over a year ago'. Day 1: 'The supermarket shelves were bursting with delicious things I couldn't have as I wandered arund looking for organic carrots and lentils and pumpkin seeds.' Day 2: 'I go into a semi-trance as the reflexologist works on my feet and waft home in a blissful state of tranquility.' Day 3: 'The juicer has opened up whole new possibilities in my life.' Day 4: I've worked out that capsules are easier to swallow if I take a few blueberries between each one.' Day 5: 'I never thought I'd hear myself say this but I like this detox diet.' Day 6: 'It all seems quite natural to have a stranger sitting beside me, occasionally rubbing my stomach encouragingly, as I lie happily on my back with a tube up my bottom.' Day 7 & 8: Chris James says that you should not feel hungry during this period as the fibrous agent in the supplements 'will swell in your stomach and make you feel full'. My stomach laughed hollowly at this notion, then rumbled loudly.' Day 9: Try to avoid public transport or places where there are likely to be large numbers of tourists getting in your way during the power phase. You will just be tempted to start screaming very powerfully.'

The last three days are a breeze as I can eat again. Just fruit and vegetables and nuts and seeds, but after three days of not eating it is sheer bliss to chew. And to reward my body for doing without food for three days - three whole days! - I give it a bit of toast one night (it threw a total strop on the day it could eat again, and refused to have any breakfast - just to make a point).

I feel good, I have more energy and I feel my body - once it got over its little temper tantrum - has really benefited from the detox. I would definitely do this diet again (though maybe not the three days of not eating), and in fact I plan to cut down on dairy, sugar and carbs straight away. Detox diet - thumbs up!
