See three thousand little critters on show!
This year the Burgess Premier Small Animal Show is running the UK's only Rabbit Grand National - I will be there and I am so SO excited about it!
I have lived with house rabbits for - ooh - three years now, and it has blown me away how close you can get to a rabbit and what incredible creatures they are. They're the third most popular pet in the UK - dogs are first, cats aren't far behind and rabbits are third, with an estimated 1.4 million of them having won their way into our lives. So I am not the only one to be partial to these adorable creatures - yes, it's official, rabbits are popular!
Followers of my blog will remember the beautiful Audrey Rabbit, who died in September, aged three - she would lick my hand to say 'good morning', would come running up to me when I came in the room and knew as many words as your average dog, including UP, DOWN, IN YOUR CAGE and ROOM SERVICE (when I wanted her out of the cage to clean it). She is very much missed.
I now live with Harrison and Molly (see them kissing, above) - Harrison is a good jumper. I have come into the room to find him on a top shelf before now. I'm hoping to buy him some rabbit jumps at the show and get him practising in the garden when I get home. I love niche markets and family days out and I think it'll be a fun and fabulous event - can't wait to see what other ingenious items they'll have on sale for lucky bunnies with bunny-mad owners!
I am taking the whole family up to Harrogate for the event. My son, who didn't like animals much now says he can't remember life without rabbits - I think that's a good thing. We are all looking forward to seeing the rabbits jumping over hurdles over a metre high. But there won't only be rabbits there - we are talking gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice and rats too. I will be steering clear of the rats.
The Burgess Premier Small Animal Show is on Saturday 28th 9.00-17.30 & Sunday 29th January 9.00-16.00 at the Yorkshire Event Centre, Great Yorkshire Showground, Railway Road, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG2 8QZ; to book tickets visit www.smallanimalshow.co.uk. Tickets to the show start at £7 for adults and £3 children and will also be available on the door.
