Are you traditional or modern, pop or classic?
I only ask because I've just been confronted with 40 on a new CD called 'Me to You at Christmas'. It does the rare thing of combining traditional and modern, classical and pop, carol and contemporary. So you've got Nat King Cole's 'Deck the Halls' alongside Jona Lewis' 'Stop the Cavalry', 'O Come All Ye Faithful' beside 'Santa Baby' and the Snowfall Cha-Cha with 'Never Do a Tango with an Eskimo'. (Eh?)
I'm fairly traditional when it comes to Christmas music. Deck the Halls plays permanently in my head from December 1st. 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing' is beautiful, one of my favourites. 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' is sobering in its soulful melody. I have a brilliant jazz version of 'Little Drummer Boy'by Lou Rawls on CD. And I also love Jingle Bells. One of my happiest travel moments was accidently stumbling across the building where Jingle Bells was written - commemorated by a plaque - in Medford, Massachusetts. Who knew?!
But my favourite Christmas song, the one that sometimes moves me to tears when I hear it, is 'Silent Night'. Which is not on the CD. Which may be for the best. I don't think I could cope with a Christina Aguilera version just yet.
