Things that made me go 'mmm'
In no order whatsoever:
Lunch from Tibits: this was delivered to the food editor's desk, but I got to eat it. In honour of National Vegetarian Week, glass noodles were served up with tofu, cucumber, carrot and celery sticks, with a spicy dressing, and a side dish of dried bean salad with walnuts and coriander. This tasted a lot nicer than that sounds. Tibits, a bar, restaurant and takeaway, describes itself as 'vegetarian paradise', and you can find it at 12-14 Heddon Street, off Regent Street, London W1B 4DA. You serve yourself from to tempting layers of hot and cold, sweet and savoury, and pay by weight, whether you eat in or take away
Home-grown radishes: on the basis that all the seeds never germinate, we sowed an entire packet of radish seeds back before the rainy season. And this week, we had a bumper harvest. If you're experiencing similar bounty, check out our radish recipes here.
We've eaten some with cold beer, and made a rather unusual cold soup from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, using the radish leaves too, plus apple and mint.
Rowntree's Fruit Pastille ice lolly: Yesterday, after a long. hot day working at home in the garden (life is so hard!), I treated myself to one of these to cool down. I love the way the fruity flavours are layered on top of each other. I love the slim, cylindrical shape that makes it easy to eat.
Hazelnut 'milk' and oats: this is my new, new favourite breakfast. Soak the oats overnight in the Alpro hazelnut drink (available from supermarkets), so they soften and take on a hazelnutty flavour. Add grated apple and it's almost too good to bear...
A chilled glass of rosé: OK, more than one. But I don't mean Californian blush, which to me doesn't taste much like wine, just sweet. (I know California makes lots of good wine but for me that's not one of them.) For preference, I'd like a Rioja rosado, made in Spain, where I first started drinking rosé in the summer many years ago, because everyone else did. So I'm happy to see rosé is surging in popularity in the UK too
The five best things I ate last week.
