Liz Earle: makeup news and top tips

Makeup advice and new launch from the skincare guru

by Bernadette Fallon

Liz Earle fans stand-by - a new launch is on the way. The skincare guru, whose iconic Cleanse & Polish cleanser sells one every minute, is just about to move into makeup. And what makeup it is.

Created using natural ingredients as far as possible, while still delivering the results we want (face it, we don't need it but it generally makes us feel good), every product is multi-tasking. Well, with the exception of the mascara which does what it's supposed to, everything else can be used in at least two, and sometimes three, different ways. So you have a cream blush that goes on cheeks, lips and eyes, a bronzer that can be used on the cheeks or as an eyeshadow, a lipgloss that can be applied wherever colour is needed and a pre-mascara eyelash treatment that doubles as an eyebrow smoother. The face powder has a natural mineral SPF of 15 and includes ingredients like Shea butter and plant oils, so it doesn't have the drying effect of normal powders and won't cake on the skin.

According to celebrity makeup artist Jane Bradley, it's the best powder she has ever used. And when the woman who has made up stars like Leona Lewis, Patsy Kensit and sienna Miller says it's her favourite, you know she's tried quite a few!

At a demonstration this morning Jane shared some of her top insider makeup tips with us as she made up the model pictured above. Try them yourself:

1. Concealer is a great way to hide under-eye blemishes and hide dark circles but when applying don't take it right to the edge of the eye where it may settle in fine lines and wrinkles and draw attention to them. Instead use a brush to apply concealer half way across.
2. Use a darker concealer than your skin tone to contour your face and give yourself killer cheekbones - makeup artists have been doing it for years! Use a line of dark concealer under the cheekbone and blend it with your fingers underneath and onto the bone. Use another line of lighter concealer under this to really add definition to the jawbone. I've seen it - it works!
3. Use concealer on your eyelids to reduce pinkness (tired eyes will appear particularly pink) and make them look brighter. It's also a great base for eye-shadow.
4. Don't use light-reflecting concealer to hide spots or blemishes - as it's designed to radiate light it will just draw more attention to them.
5. Use blusher in the eye socket, applied with a large brush, to give a natural sunkissed effect.
6. Apply your second coat of mascara while the first one is still wet to stop eyelashes clogging.
7. Run your fingers over the tips of your eyelashes after applying mascara to clean off excess product and stop it spotting on your skin.
8. Heavy eyeliner can have an ageing effect, prevent this while still enhancing your lashes by stipling an eye pencil in the root area. This will draw them out beautifully.
9. After applying eye pencil, blend it with a small brush to create definition and avoid a heavy line that may look ageing.

The new makeup range, Liz Earle Colour, will be available from May at www.lizearle.com, in all Liz Earle stores, selected John Lewis and on QVC. For more information and to find your nearest store visit the website.
