It's Walk to Work Week

Start the day with a stroll

by Adrienne Wyper

This morning I walked to work, and it was great. (Well, technically, I walked less than 10% of the way - but I do live 30 miles away, so I reckon I can be forgiven.)

Walking is just about the easiest form of exercise, needs no special equipment, and fits easily into your day. My 1.9-mile trip from Victoria station to Broadwick St in Soho burned 189 calories and on the way I enjoyed: summer dresses in M&S; soldiers with guns guarding the barracks; a couple on a tandem; a man exercising with a stretchy band round a tree, with his personal trainer; Big Ben striking the quarter-hour; bold squirrels cruising for snacks, a group of lost teenagers debating climbing a tree to find the others; another group of around 50 teenagers practising a dance routine; a dozen ducklings scrambling over the pond weed in St James's Park; tempting cakes in a bakery window, and more - much more interesting than the view from the Tube.

Visit www.livingstreets.org.uk to find out more about the campaign, sign up you and your colleagues - and find out how many calories you're burning.

If you want to see my route, it overlaps with why walking is so good for you, and how it helps you lose weight

If you can't walk to work, or even part of the way,try one of our lovely free walks nationwide.
