Cheer up October with Queen Priscilla

It's worth the effort and journey to see Priscilla Queen of Desert

by Bernadette Fallon

Feeling Octoberish? Cold weather getting you down? Nothing to look forward to except the clocks going back and long dark days?

Grab a feather boa, get on a train to London and head for Priscilla Queen of the Desert. You may be feeling sluggish going in - I certainly was at the end of a very long week at work - but two songs later the cobwebs were blown soundly off me. I couldn't figure out why my jaws were aching, then I realised it was becasue they were stretched in a permanent smile. This is high energy, high comedy, high spectacle and high on good feeling.

Don Gallagher, Richard Grieve and Oliver Thornton play a blinder as the three transvestites who cross the Australian outback in a silver bus called Priscilla, but the story is pretty irrelevant really, apart from providing a little tearjerker family reunion at the end. Cast-wise the other big news is the return of Ray Meagher to the show - you may also know him as Home and Away's Alf Stewart, a role he has played for 24 years.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert is all about fun, flamboyance and adrenalin-infused songs like 'Downtown', 'Venus', 'Go West' and 'Hot Stuff'. It's a riot of colour explosion and over-the-top costumes (everyone dressed as fairy cakes is my own particular favourite), it has sequins and saucy humour by the bucket-load, is played out to gales of laughter from the auditorium and is so feel good you'll want to return for a regular fix. 'The second time is even better than the first', the woman behind me shouted to her companion during the dance-along standing ovation. 'I just want to keep coming back,' was the answer.
