The sun is shining but the streets are cold
I'm working at home today as I had to take my husband to hospital for a day clinic procedure. He's fine. Enfield is not. The hospital is Chase Farm which is just outside Enfield town centre where the riots have been taking place. I avoided the town centre on the way there but on the way back my son had begged me to pop into an Enfield deparment store and get him some Lego that he was desperate for.
I parked at the local Tesco and walked over to Pearson's, past shops with smashed windows and many a policeman comforting nervous older ladies. And the whole place felt so sad. We were there - a sparse bunch of determined shoppers - but the place didn't feel like ours anymore. There was a sense that it even though it was just about okay right now, come night time it might well be a different matter.
Inside Pearson's department store, just less than half of the ground floor was cordoned off while staff was still busy clearing up - it was the jewellery section that had been looted. The toy section was fine, but empty (how odd for a day in the summer holidays), so I bought my son's Lego and came back. I pray Enfield and the rest of the UK will be safe tonight.
