5 things to do this week

From getting your first taste of Christmas to baking a sweet batch of baklava...

by Bernadette Fallon

Wednesday

John Lewis Christmas Shop opens its doors. No, it’s not too early – start planning now and spread the cost over the next few months. Remember, you vowed never to do the ‘Christmas Eve dash’ again…

And if you need more inspiration, have a look at our gift guides for foodiesluxe lovers, gadget freaks and men here.

Thursday

Last chance to drink a designer cocktail at One Aldwych tonight. Devised with Tanqueray Gin to celebrate Fashion Weeks from Milan to London, as the lights go down on the final catwalk in Paris tonight sample tipples inspired by Calvin Klein, Alice Temperley, Moschino, and Chanel.

We particularly like ‘Milan’, pictured left.

Friday

Fuelled by your shopping trip, you’ll no doubt be looking for more festive entertainment. Now’s the time to book a jaunt to a Christmas market – in the UK or abroad.

Or maybe a show? Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, starring Aled Jones, runs at London’s Dominion Theatre from 8 November 2014 to 3 January 2015; tickets £37.50 - £67.50, booking now at 0845 200 7982, visit www.whitechristmasmusical.co.uk for more information.

Saturday

Time for a little weekend baking. With the final of 'The Great British Bake Off' looming, the whole country will be in a baking frenzy this Saturday; try your hand at some of last week’s recipes, including berry upside down cake and baklava. And watch out for recipes for the grand final here on the site early next week.

Sunday

After all that shopping, cocktail drinking and baking, you’ll need a little rest. Make a cup of tea, run and bath and retreat with a good book. We’re reading One Night in Italy by Lucy Diamond this week – you might want to try that? Coming up next week is 'Saving Grace' by Jane Green. Sign up for our book club to get lots of inspiring ideas for your winter reading.
