The five best things I ate this week

Things that made me go 'mmm'

by Adrienne Wyper

In no order whatsoever...

ROSTI

One of the classics of Swiss cooking, rösti is a pan-fried potato cake made with grated potato and onion. This one was perfectly crispy around the edges and softly yielding inside. On top is Tomme cheese, molten inside, which cascaded down like lava when I cut into it. I tucked into this lovely lunch (and for once, this is a picture of the exact dish I ate) al fresco at the Café Restaurant Gîte de Planchouet near Nendaz in the Valais region of Switzerland. See all of our rösti recipes

APRICOT SORBET IN APRICOT BRANDY

Nendaz, where I spent a few days recently, is surrounded by apricot trees laden with fruit. My favourite dessert of the trip was an apricot sorbet served in a glass with a generous measure of apricot brandy poured over. The sorbet's chill combined with the fire of the alcohol was a great combination - and both tasted beautiofully apricotty.

CHERRIES

As cherries are my favourite fruit, I've been gorging on these recently. Brown paper bagsful bought at the roadside in Kent, from Berwick Street market and stalkless picota cherries from the supermarket, I'll eat them all!

GOOSEBERRIES FROM MY GARDEN

I've never seen gooseberries that are deep red, nor tasted any that were sweet. (Yes, it's definitely a gooseberry bush!). We enjoyed the first handful harvest crushed, mixed with elderflower cordial and stirred into Greek yogurt. For the rest I reckon I'll make Nigel Slater's gooseberry crumble cake

NOODLE SALAD

When it's hot, lots of us want to eat cold food, but that doesn't have to mean leafy salads. I whipped up a variation of Nigella Lawson's Sesame Peanut Noodles for dinner, with enough for packed lunch next day. I added some marinated tofu pieces to mine and my mix of veg was somewhat different, but this recipe is where I started out. And it was very good indeed.
