If, like Cindy Crawford and Gwyneth Paltrow, you've been swooshing the same lustrous locks for decades, it could be time for a change. Because everyone - and that includes Cindy and Gwyneth - should consider rethinking their look as the years go by. The reason? What suited you in your 20s and 30s may not necessarily be the best option now.
'My advice to a woman who's kept her hair the same for decades would be to try a new hairdresser,' says Jessica Speechly, head of colour at Gina Conway Aveda Lifestyle Salons & Spas. 'Quite often, the reason why someone hasn't changed their style is that they've always had the same pair of eyes on it. So get opinions from other stylists and go with the one that appeals most.'

Should we also change our hair colour as we age? 'Our skin tone and hair colour naturally lightens as we age,' explains organic colour expert Karine Jackson. 'So what suited us in our 20s and 30s won't necessarily work in our 40s and beyond, There's a temptation to colour hair the shade you grew up with - but if this is brown or black, chances are it'll be far too harsh now. A shade or two lighter than your natural colour, like Gwyneth's golden tresses, will flatter your features. A few highlights can disguise greys beautifully, too.
'Hair can become coarser as we age,' Karine continues. 'So to keep it soft and manageable, incorporate a weekly hair mask into your routine. It can also grow weaker, so you may need to trim the ends more regularly to prevent them snapping. Try a serum to seal the ends and add shine.'

We've seen Madonna's hair colour change from blonde bombshell to gothic black over the years, but now that she's in her 50s she keeps her colour a natural golden blonde. She clearly knows that as we age, our skin tone and hair colour naturally lighten and has adjusted her colour to suit.
'A shade or two lighter than your natural colour will flatter your features. A few highlights can disguise greys beautifully, too,' says organic colour expert Karine Jackson.
'It's good idea to change your style from time to time,' advises top stylist Ian Florey, who works with Karine. 'If clients are prone to keeping the same style for a long period, I suggest subtle tweaks - no major changes - so their style always looks fresh and evolving. That way, if there's a change you can't get on with, you can amend it quickly and easily at the next appointment.'

'My advice for a hair chameleon? Enjoy it!' says Jessica Speechly, head of colour at Gina Conway Aveda Lifestyle Salons & Spas. 'Of course, it's a good idea to experiment to find the style that suits you. But do make sure you take your stylist's advice about what will and won't work for you, and always use the right products for your hair type and colour. The downside to all those changes is that they can dry out and damage your hair - so product choice is key to protecting it.'
Another maintenance tip? 'As hair starts to change both in colour and texture - usually in our 40s - it may become coarser,' warns organic colour expert Karine Jackson. 'To keep it soft and manageable, incorporate a weekly hair mask into your routine.'
