Going to see a film adaptation of a book you've read can provoke some anxiety. Will the actors who've been cast match how you see the characters? Will whole chunks of plot be cast aside? Will the ending be changed?

Set your worries aside with 'We Need to Talk about Kevin'. Lionel Shriver herself describes the film as 'Stunning - a brilliant adaptation of my novel'. I read the book a couple of years ago and I agree with the author.

Not to do a plot spoiler, but you probably know it's about a boy who behaves very badly indeed and the impact it has on his family. If anything, I felt it dwelt less on Kevin's destructive acts, and more on the aftermath of lives forever ruined, and had a much greater impact for playing down the shock and horror.

It's a very powerful film, quite bleak and painful to watch in parts - certainly not a feelgood rom-com with a happy ending!

The film is sure to raise a lot of questions about family and relationships, and whether parents are to blame for their offspring's behaviour for the audience. As I left the preview screening, that's what everyone was discussing, as well as the truly great performance from Tilda Swinton (spare a moment to register her great wardrobe too). Ezra Miller, as Kevin, turns in a chillingly controlled performance. Check out the positioning of a red element in each of the early scenes.
