Hot celebrity diets for 2015: Sakara Life diet

Try a taste: This organic vegan eating plan is more of a nutritious meal delivery service which is getting supermodels and stars all over the world excited – and looking great. Founded in 2011 by Whitney Tingle and Danielle DuBoise, the Sakara regime is “a weight loss and healthy living program based on a whole-food, plant-rich diet” which is full of greens and healthy fats.

Who’s a fan: This New York-based regime has caught the well-trained eye of well-heeled Gwyneth Paltrow, who recommends their “signature superfood salad dressings, which are boosted with health-promoting ingredients like chia, hemp and spirulina”. Supermodel (and Mrs David Bowie) Iman is also a fan, and it’s beloved by Victoria’s Secrets models Lily Aldridge, Erin Heatherton and Karolina Kurkova.

Get your teeth into it: This is healthy living at its best: the Sakara meals are colourful and almost too beautiful to eat, from morning oats with yellow pear and rose petals to lemon-scented quinoa with grilled artichokes and asparagus. Currently only available in NYC, Boston and Washington DC, this plan doesn’t come cheap (prices start at $99 for a one-day trial). But their rainbow platefuls are packed with goodness, as the pair point out: “We believe that food should be bright, vibrant, and beautiful! The greater the colour, the higher the nutrient content; the more colours you eat, the more array of nutrients you’re getting (hello plant protein).”

Unlike other diets, there are no juices on the menu – just lots of lovely vegetables. “Want to know what’s better than drinking a green juice every day? Eating your greens! The key is to eat a minimum of one to three cups of greens with every lunch and dinner meal. This doesn’t mean you’re only eating salads (though if you’re new to eating greens, it may feel like it!); instead, you’re eating your meal and greens.” Plus the fruits and vegetables help to keep you hydrated, meaning younger-looking skin and a natural glow. There’s no calorie counting and there are lots of healthy fats in the nuts, seeds and vegetables they include in their meals. “We don't talk about carbs or calories - in fact cravings are healthy and not something to be afraid of. Our philosophy is about balanced eating, and not about extremes,” says DuBoise.

Tips from the top: There’s no need to worry about lacking protein in the plan. “Did you know that 50 per cent of calories in green vegetables are actually derived from protein? And that four cups of kale packs in 12 grams of protein?” say the pair, who want to spread the word that it’s possible to get your protein intake from whole foods that are plant-based.

Try it yourself: To make Sakara’s superfood Thanksgiving kale salad, peel and cube a butternut squash, then coat with olive oil and bake for 30 minutes. Combine the roasted squash with five cups of chopped baby kale and five cups of red kale, half a cup of pecans, half a cup of pumpkin seeds and half a cup of pomegranate seeds. Toss in a cup of blueberries, a cup of golden raspberries, a chopped persimmon and a handful of goji berries. Dress with Sakara dressing and sprinkle with four tablespoons of hemp seeds.
