Try a taste: Better digestion, clearer skin, improved concentration and even increased happiness are just some of the benefits promised by this alkalising eating plan, developed by chef Natasha Corrett and her godmother, nutritionist Vicki Edgson. The Honestly Healthy food philosophy is based around eating plenty of alkaline foods, like green vegetables, almonds, garlic, olive oil and lemons, and avoiding acidic foods like sugar, dairy products and meat for 70 per cent of the time.

Who’s a fan: Victoria Beckham tweeted a picture of Corrett and Edgson’s book 'Honestly Healthy: Eat With Your Body In Mind, The Alkaline Way' with the caption “Love this healthy eating cookbook X” and Corrett, who’s Sienna Miller’s stepsister, has also delivered her home-cooked alkaline meals to celebrities including Natalie Imbruglia.

Get your teeth into it: “The thing we really want to stress as much as possible is that this is not a diet - it's a healthy way of eating. The whole reason for creating it was to get out of faddy diets,” says Corrett. “The alkaline eating plan is about getting your body into the optimum state it can be in - and alkaline is healthier than acidic. When your body is alkaline you have clear skin, greater concentration, shiny hair… all the things you want, with the bonus of weight loss.”

On the menu is lots of oily fish, wholegrains, grapefruits, lemons and limes, almonds and green tea plus plenty of vegetables: among the most alkalising are fennel, broccoli, artichoke, asparagus, beetroot, kale, spinach, watercress and cauliflower. You should avoid gluten, sugar, meat and dairy but the remaining 30 per cent of the time, you can eat what you like - including all those forbidden goodies. “The best thing is that when you do go back to eating all these things 30 per cent of the time, you won't feel as good as when you don't eat them at all which means you therefore eat them less and the weight falls off naturally,” says Corrett, who herself shed two stone when she switched to an alkali diet.

Tips from the top: Refined sugar may be a no-no, but that doesn’t mean you can’t indulge your sweet tooth. Corrett recommends making up a batch of pureed apple (which is quite high on the alkaline scale) and using that in place of sugar to tackle any cravings.  “I quite often make up a big batch and store it in the freezer in little ice cube trays – this means you can just pop out a cube when you need and wang it in your smoothies, porridge, soups and even in your baking too,” she says.

Try it yourself: Pumpkin smoothie is just one of the unusual recipes created by Corrett. Blend 150g cooked squash or pumpkin with a quarter of a teaspoon of cinnamon, two tablespoons of coconut yoghurt, a tablespoon of lucuma powder, a cup of water, a tablespoon of coconut oil and a frozen banana until smooth.
