Helen Mirren’s mid-length style is a shining example of a grown-up bob. It’s great for all hair textures and can be cut to suit anyone. Wear it with height for a fuller face, or a side-swept fringe if your face is angular.

It’s the perfect combo of low maintenance and sophistication that makes this style so easy to wear. ‘This versatile cut can be worn smooth or with lift and body,’ says TV hairdresser Andrew Barton. ‘The layers are long to maintain thickness in the hair, and it is a flattering short-but-long cut.
Lay the foundations with a volumising shampoo and conditioner such as Space NK Living Proof Full Shampoo & Full Conditioner, both £18 (020 8740 2085; www.spacenk.co.uk). Then, when hair is 80% dry, create lasting fullness with a volumising spray or mousse such as Andrew Barton I Love Volume Volumptious Mousse, £3.95 (available at Asda).
Twiggy’s long bouncy layers and soft fringe give movement and interest. Ideal for a round or oval face shape and thick, coarse and unruly hair – the length of the cut will reduce its weight and heaviness.

Lulu’s sought-after, textured style works well on most hair types and can be adapted to suit virtually any face shape, simply by changing the length of the layers or the way the fringe falls.

‘Sliced layers give this style wearability, femininity and movement,’ says Kevin Moss, creative director at John Frieda and Lulu’s personal hairstylist. ‘The layers fall to accentuate Lulu’s eyes and cheekbones. We deliberately make it look a little grown out – a fringe that sweeps over one eye and long, soft layering – with no hard lines.’
Create height at the crown with a root-thickening lotion like John Frieda Luxurious Volume Thickening Blow Dry Lotion, £5.49. Kevin finger-dries Lulus hair and blow-dries the fringe, using irons to flip out the layers try Toni&Guy Touch Control 230 Digital Straighteners, £69.99 (Argos). Jamie Lee Curtis has embraced her grey, which looks great on her oval face. Her naturally coarse hair is thick and unruly, but her cut tames it. This style does require confi dence, however, and a touch more make-up.

‘This is a low-maintenance haircut, perfect for anyone with a busy lifestyle,’ says Richard Ward. ‘One perk of thick hair is that it never looks fl at, and the length means any dry or damaged hair will be removed regularly, so hair is vibrant and in the best possible condition.’

Joanna Lumley’s long layers kiss the shoulders and give a glamorous, groomed look. Your face changes with age and this style suits women with fine to medium hair, a square face and a less-than-defined jaw line.

‘The layers soften the face, while the blended fringe will hide both a lined forehead and crow’s feet,’ says Marc Trinder, Charles Worthington master stylist. ‘However, it wouldn’t work for a woman with a round face.’
Apply a heatprotective product such as Kérastase Resistance Ciment Thermique, £18.30, (0800 316 4400) or Charles Worthington Front Row Blow Dry Spray, £6.12, at the roots, then blow dry hair with a round brush for plenty of lift. Juliette Binoche’s off-the-face hairstyle is good for round, square and long faces. It is particularly well suited to thick hair with lots of natural movement and texture, and epitomises low-maintenance chic.

‘This hair cut is easy and adaptable, and you can leave it to dry naturally, which is a bonus,’ says hairdresser Errol Douglas. ‘The style will also soften your features, and looks loose and youthful.’
Run a small amount of mousse through damp hair, then tip your head upside down. Rough-dry hair using a diffuser on the end of your hairdryer, scrunching hair with your hands as you go to encourage natural movement. When hair is almost dry, tip your head up and finish with some hairspray to keep the style in place, such as Wellafl ex Silvikrin Hairspray, Firm Hold, £1.99 for 250ml. A diffuser is a great way to get extra root lift, body and volume. Try Babyliss Universal Diffuser, from £10 (www.babyliss.co.uk).
Natasha Kaplinsky wears a soft cut that flips out at the sides and frames her oval/square face beautifully. This style is good for those with thick hair or medium-textured, fine hair with some wave to it.

‘Natasha’s mid-length, choppy layers help give her fine hair texture and volume, as well as framing her cheekbones. The loose fringe has a modern, unstructured feel,’ says Richard Ward, Natasha's personal stylist.
Create body with TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Shampoo and Conditioner, both £5.50. To style, try a texturising styling cream such as Bumble and bumble Bb Texture, £21 for 5oz (0800 014 7424). Then blow-dry with a round brush for lots of body, or with a vent brush for a straighter feel.
This short cut is easy to wear and makes your face the centre of attention. Best for heart-shaped or long faces, and hair with some natural movement. Short cuts are also good for making hair appear thicker.

‘This is a really flattering cut that you can wear mussed up, or down in a soft crop – think Annie Lennox,’ says hairdresser Errol Douglas. ‘As well as being very striking, it’s actually incredibly youthful, and you can alter the cut to suit you – a longer fringe to hide a large forehead or longer sides to disguise large ears, for example.’
Simply blow dry hair roughly using your fingers, then apply Charles Worthington Front Row High Defi nition Crackle Wax, £6.12 (Boots), with fingers to give texture and movement. For extra shine, finish with Paul Mitchells Awapuhi Wild Ginger Styling Treatment Oil, £24.95 (0845 659 0012). It contains ultra lightweight, natural dry oils to tame frizz and add a healthy shine.
