Summer hair care: K Fusion by L’Kerabelle

If the word ‘frizz’ means anything to you, summer sunshine may not be your friend. Particularly on those heavy humid days when hair soaks up moisture and becomes a self-sprouting halo of horror.

Styling tools – straighteners, curlers – can help to alleviate the problem and tame tresses to an extent. But once you step out the door, you’re at the mercy of hot moist air – and who knows what will happen …

What’s the solution?

To ban frizz for summer, you could think about investing in a permanent keratin hair treatment. It guarantees you at least three to four months of smooth, manageable, silky locks, whatever the weather. And with minimal styling required – generally, it is a case of just wash and go.

Professionally applied in a hair salon, the treatment gradually washes out, though your hair type and frequency of washing will determine how long it lasts; I’ve had results that have lasted for between eight and nine months on previous treatments.

What’s the treatment called?
K Fusion by L’Kerabelle, available at ColourNation in London and UK salons nationwide.

How does it work?

The keratin solution smoothes and defrizzes the hair from the hair follicles out. First a clarifying shampoo is applied to deeply cleanse and open up the follicles to receive the keratin. Then the solution is brushed in and left to absorb. Finally the excess is rinsed off, the hair is blow-dried and parted into sections, and each section is sealed with hot irons to set the keratin.

How long does it take?

From start to finish, the treatment takes about two and a half hours. Most time-consuming is the sealing process, though this will depend on how much hair you have – shorter hair will not take as long.

Does it involve putting chemicals in my hair?

The formula used by K Fusion is 100% formaldehyde free, suitable for all hair types and safe for use during pregnancy.

How do I take care of my hair afterwards?
You can’t wash your hair for 48 hours afterwards as the keratin is being absorbed. Once you do start washing, avoid shampoo and conditioner with sodium chloride (which is most of them, opt for a specialist shampoo by L’Kerabelle; I’m using their Coarse Hair Shampoo and Fine Hair Conditioner). Sodium chloride will strip out the keratin and you will have wasted your time and money.

Can I have the treatment if my hair is tinted, coloured or highlighted?
Yes, though it is recommended that you leave a gap of at least two weeks between having your hair coloured and the treatment applied. Ideally, wait to apply colour after the treatment. If you do it the other way round, you may find that your colour is slightly lightened by the keratin – mine was, though not to a very noticeable extent.

How much is it and where do I book?

K Fusion by L’Kerabelle from £130 at ColourNation, 5 Winsley Street, London; phone 020 7580 3669 for more information or visit the website at www.colournation.com
