Hair products on test: YOGI hair wand
Every year, new and more sophisticated hair gadgets hit the market. But some of the original curling tools such as the YOGI hair wand have been available since 2009. How do they compare to their newer rivals? Bernadette Fallon revisits her YOGI.
The YOGI hair wand was probably the first hair ‘gadget’ I ever tested, back in the days before celebrity hairdressers had cornered the market, when curling tongs and straightening irons were still a bit of a novelty. And despite the number of products that have passed through my hands and my hair in the years in-between, I still return faithfully to the YOGI when I need a quick and easy curl. Precisely because of the simplicity that yes, possibly does make it look a bit dated in the face of the bells-and-whistles-gadgets available now, including the wonder products that are both straighteners and curlers!
With no extra parts to clip hair into, no clicking or locking or fusing or automatic turning – just a bare ‘wand’ that heats up and lets you wrap hair around it – it couldn’t be easier to use. There are no heat settings to fiddle with – it just gets hot! – and no attachments to fumble with. Wrap a thin strand of hair around the wand for a defined ringlet curl, take a wider section of hair for a loose bouncy curl. And that’s it.
The only slight drawback is that you may burn yourself if you don’t use the heat-resistant glove provided – I certainly did every time I decided not to bother with it, but I soon learned that it’s practically impossible not to touch the wand on your skin when rolling the hair around the barrel. With the glove, you feel nothing.
If you like bells and whistles, heat levels and lots of setting options, this is not for you. If you are after something basic and straightforward that gives you a variety of different curl options, this is tops.
The YOGI hair wand is good value in an expensive hair tool market at £59.95. It’s also available as part of a kit, which includes a hair straightener – for those who prefer not to have their hair tools combined - heat resistant glove – take our word for it and wear it! - velvet pouch bag, storage bag & a full set of instructions.
