The delicate stitches of crochet mirror the many facets of a snowflake. Attach ribbon to hang these on the tree, mantelpiece or window. After making, stiffen them with sugar solution or starch so they keep their shape.

Abbreviations for stitches

ch: chain(s); ch sp: chain space; dc: double crochet; dtr: double treble; htr: half treble; ss: slip stitch; tr: treble; yrh: yarn round hook

Before beginning, thread six beads onto the cotton. To begin, make 14ch and join with a ss in first ch to form a ring.

Round 1 (RS) 24dc in ring, 1ss in first dc. (Do not turn at end of rounds – work with RS always facing.)

Round 2 4ch, 1dtr in same place as ss, *3ch (2dtr in next dc) twice; rep from *, ending with 3ch, 2dtr in next dc, 1ss in 4th of first 4ch. (12 3-ch sps)

Round 3 1ss in next dtr, 1ss in first ch of next 3-ch sp, 1dc in same 3-ch sp, *4ch, 1dc in next 3-ch sp; rep from *, ending with 4ch, 1ss in first dc.

Round 4 *Work (1dc, 1htr, 3tr, 1htr, 1dc) all in next 4-ch loop; rep from *, ending with 1ss in first dc. (12 scallops)

Round 5 1ss in each of next 2sts, 1dc in next st (centre tr of scallop), *5ch – leaving the last loop of each dtr on hook, work 1dtr in next tr, miss next 4 sts, 1dtr in next st, yrh and draw through all 3 loops on hook (a joint dtr made) – 5ch, 1dc in next st (centre tr of scallop), 8ch, miss next 6 sts, 1dc in next st (centre tr of scallop); rep from * omitting 1dc at end of last rep, 1ss in first dc.

Round 6 1ss in first ch of next 5-ch loop, 3ch, 7tr in same 5-ch loop, *3ch, 8tr in next 5-ch loop, work (1dc, 3ch, 1dc) all in next 8-ch loop, 8tr in next 5-ch loop; rep from * omitting 8tr at end of last rep; 1ss in 3rdd of first 3ch.

Round 7 (bead round) 1ss in each of next 7tr, 1ss in first ch of next 3-ch loop, 8ch, slide bead up close to hook, 2ch – first of these ch secures bead in place – 1ss in 4th ch from hook, 2ch, 1dtr in same 3-ch loop, *7ch, work (1dc, 3ch, 1dc) all in next 3-ch loop, 7ch, work (1dtr, 4ch, slide bead up close to hook, 2ch, 1ss in 4th ch from hook, 2ch, 1dtr) all in same 3-ch loop (V-st made); rep from * omitting V-st at end of last rep, 1ss in 4th of first ch made. Fasten off.
