Make this cute chick cosy to keep your egg warm
Materials
● Any DK yarns in yellow, brown, orange and white
● A 3.5mm (UK9: USE/4) crochet hook
● Darning needle

Method
The chick's body is worked in the round beginning with a foundation loop (floop) and is worked from the centre top, outwards and then downwards, in spiral rounds with no joins. The eyes, beak, wings, legs and feathers for tail and head are worked separately and stitched on.
Chick
With 3.5mm hook and yellow yarn, mk floop and 1ch.
Round 1: 6dc into floop (6 sts).
Round 2: Dc2inc 6 times (12 sts).
Round 3: (1dc, dc2inc) 6 times (18 sts).
Round 4: (2dc, dc2inc) 6 times (24 sts).
Round 6: (3dc, dc2inc) 6 times (30 sts).
Rounds 7-15: Work even in dc.
Round 16: (1dc, dc2inc) to end (45 sts).
Wk 2ss to finish. Break off yarn.
Eyes (make 2 alike)
With 3.5mm hook and white yarn, mk floop and 1ch.
Round 1: 6dc into floop (6 sts).
Ss to join and then fasten off. Sew in beg end of yarn to WS of eye and trim close.
With darning needle and brown yarn, stitch pupil. Break off yarn, tie beg and end tog in a double knot to secure and trim close.
Beak
With 3.5mm hook and orange yarn, mk 4ch.
Row 1: Sk1ch, 1dc, 1htr, 1tr (3 sts). This forms an isosceles triangle shape.
Next: Wk one round in ss around the piece, working 1ss at each corner. This will neaten the edge.
Break off yarn.
Wings (make 2 alike)
With 3.5mm hook and yellow yarn, mk 5ch.
Sk4ch and wk 6dtr into last ch st. Then mk3ch and ss into that same last ch st to finish.
Break off yarn.
Tail feathers
With 3.5mm hook and brown yarn, mk 1ch, (9ch, 1ss into very first ch st) 7 times.
Break off yarn.
Feathers for top of head
With 3.5mm hook and brown yarn, mk 1ch, (9ch, 1ss into very first ch st) 5 times.
Break off yarn.
Legs (make 2 alike)
With 3.5mm hook and brown yarn, mk 9ch.
Sk1ch, 3ss along foll 3 ch sts, (mk4ch, sk1ch, 3ss along foll 3 ch sts) twice, 5ss along rem of original chain (back to starting point).
Break off yarn.
Making up
See photos for reference when finishing off. Sew on eyes with mattress stitch. If you find the crocheted eyes too fiddly to make and sew on, try using little buttons for eyes instead. Attach wings and both sets of feathers. Lightly steam press the legs so that they lie flat and stitch to lower body. Darn in any loose ends.
