Visas for North America
No visa is required for general tourism trips of up to 90 days under the US Visa Waiver Programme (VWP). All those arriving in the US under the VWP by air or sea are required to provide details online at least 72 hours before travel. This is known as an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA).
ESTA is generally valid for a period of two years, or until your passport expires - whichever is shorter. For each subsequent visit within that period, details including departure city, address while in the US, airline and flight number will require updating - again 72 hours before departure. There is a $14 charge, and payment must be made by credit card.
Canada
UK citizens don't normally require a visa for short stays - as long as you can show an onward/return ticket and prove you have enough funds to cover the length of your stay.
