Recycle old crockery to make ceramic hearts

recycled ceramic hearts

Enlarge heart template, below, by 200 per cent on a photocopier. Cut out template and draw heart outline on a sheet of paper and lightly on a 6in artist's canvas block, available from art shops. Protect your work surface with an old thick towel.

Put the plate or saucer in a polythene bag and gently hammer the china, until it is broken into small pieces. Place pieces inside heart outline on paper first, arranging them to give a smooth outline, then fill in the centre. Squeeze and spread a thick layer of tile adhesive inside the heart outline on the canvas block.

Transfer china pieces from the paper to the block and press down gently into the adhesive. Remove any excess adhesive with a damp cloth. Leave for a few hours to set.
