Thousands of people affected by dementia are stepping out together against the condition. Young and old are taking part in the Alzheimer’s Society’s Memory Walk, a series of events across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to raise vital funds to help those with dementia and their carers. Families blighted by the illness come together to walk, share the challenges of dementia and celebrate someone one special.

There are 800,000 people with dementia in the UK with numbers set to rise to over a million by 2021. This will soar to 1.7 million by 2050.

Memory Walk is now in its 13th year. Walks take place across England, Wales and Northern Ireland in September and October. From less than a mile to 10km, there is a distance for everyone.

Jeremy Hughes, chief executive of the Alzheimer’s Society, says: ‘People take part in Memory Walk for a number of reasons. Some people walk to be amongst others who truly understand. Some walk to celebrate loved ones. Everyone walks with one common goal: fighting dementia. Walk with us and help raise money to support people living with dementia and their carers and to fund research to find a cure once and for all.’

Television presenter Ruth Langsford, an Alzheimer’s Society ambassador, takes part every year in memory of her father, Dennis. ‘I take part in Memory Walk every year as a tribute to my wonderful Dad, who had dementia for 17 years and passed away in 2012.  Raising funds for Alzheimer’s Society is vital to help support people living with dementia and their carers today and to fund research to find a cure once and for all. I’ve done the walks in rain and shine and they’re always lovely, because you’re united by a common cause.  I would encourage everyone to sign up to Memory Walk today and bring the whole family along to share the experience.’
