● Yellow DK wool
● 3.25mm needles

How to make

Chick body
Cast on 20 sts
Stocking st for 8cm ending with a purl row
Next row k2tog k to last 2sts k2tog (18sts)
Next row purl
Repeat last 2 rows until 12sts left
P1 row
Cast off

Base
Cast on 7 sts
K 1 row, P 1 row
Inc 1 st each end of next row (9 sts)
P 1 row
Inc 1 st each end of next row (11 sts)
P 1 row
Inc 1 st each end of next row (13 sts)
Starting with a purl row St St 3 Rows
Next row k 2 tog k to last 2 sts k2 tog (11 sts)
Purl 1 row
K2 tog k to last 2 sts k2 tog (9 sts)
P 1 row
K 2 tog K to last 2 sts k2 tog (7 sts)
Cast off

Chick wings x 2 in yellow
Cast on 6 sts
K st st for 2 cms
With knit row facing k2 tog k2 k2 tog (4 sts)
P 1 row
K 2 tog k 2 tog (2 sts)
P 2 tog
Cast off

To make up
Pin body pieces right sides together
Back-stitch around leaving cast-on edges open
Stuff head. Tie ribbon around neck (for young children omit ribbon and gather up tightly for neck)
Stuff the body
Stitch on base
Stitch wings in place
Stitch on diamond-shaped scrap of orange felt for beak
Stitch eyes with dark yarn
