Because it will taste good...
Today when I got out of the tube at Piccadilly Circus it was raining, heavily, and I must have looked absolutely miserable. A woman with an umbrella smiled and said, 'Come on,' and ushered me under hers. We walked along together and had a lovely chat and I didn't arrive at work soaking. What a good woman. What a good deed! I don't know if it's because spring is in the air, but I feel very touched by good deeds at the moment. In our grasping, survival of the fittest, consumer society, good deeds are, I think, becoming increasingly important, and so I have made a decision...
I will never do a big supermarket shop without buying one fairtrade item - it won't be a struggle, even Cadbury Dairy Milk Bars are fairtrade. I read the following on the Fairtrade Fortnight website and decided it would be plain wrong not to make a point of buying fairtrade any longer... 'Millions of people in developing countries depend on farming. But they are trapped in poverty by the rules of world trade, keeping those at the start of supply chains powerless to earn enough to cover their costs and with nothing to save for their families. But with just one step you can be part of changing this.' How can I fill up my basket with goodies for my lucky family and not take a moment to think of families less fortunate? I can't.
'So shines a good deed in a weary world' wrote Shakespeare (and Gene Wilder said those same words in the first film of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'). I think they are very wise words.
