Things that made me go 'mmm'
As you read this, I'm on holiday on one of the smaller Canary Islands. I've been there before and I know what I'm likely to be eating, so I wrote this before I went.
In no order whatsoever:
Papas arrugadas: aka 'wrinkled potatoes'. 'Papas' is Canarian dialect for 'patatas': potatoes, and 'arrugadas' means wrinkled. Small unpeeled potatoes are cooked in very salty water which makes their skins wrinkle.
Ron miel: aka honey rum. This local firewater is like fierily alcoholic liquid honey - makes a lovely sundowner with lots of ice. And maybe a squeeze of fresh lime...
Mojo rojo and mojo verde: Served on the side with papas arrugadas and grilled fish or meat, these are spicy sauces made with red or green peppers, garlic, chillies and variable spices.
Gofio: a ground-up mix of grains, originally created by the Guanches, the indigenous people of the Canaries. It has a rich, slightly nutty taste and I like it with a little milk stirred in to make a paste for breakfast.
Avocado: This was the place where I first learnt to like avocados. Sun-warmed, butter-soft flesh in a state of perfect ripeness. It tasted completely different to an avocado in the UK. This could be because they're grown here and eaten fresh from the tree, so they haven't spent weeks in cold storage before they reach the shop you buy them from.
