Things that made me go 'mmm'
In no order whatsoever:
Homemade hummus: if you've never made it, you won't believe how simple it is. Can of chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice, spoonful of tahini (sesame seed paste), olive oil, salt and pepper. Blend. Eat. And you can vary the basic recipe according to the beans you have, adding herbs and spices on a whim. How about cannellini beans with parsley? Kidney beans with chilli?See our hummus recipes here.
Rose lemonade: Although a glass of rosé does slip down very easily on a warm summer evening, sometimes alcohol doesn't quite quench the thirst enough. So try rose lemonade: add a few drops of rosewater (food-grade, not perfume) to a glass of lemonade, whether it's homemade or shop-bought. Tastes like Turkish delight in a glass.Want to make lemonade? Here's a couple of recipes.
Greek-style breakfast: Porridge or toast don't seem quite right when the temperature's set to hit 30°. On days like these, I love to eat fruit, Greek yogurt and nuts, drizzled with honey. I can almost see those sugarcube houses draped with bougainvillea...
Chocolate and churros: A sad occasion: a leaving lunch for the lovely Natalie. She chose Wahaca, a restaurant specialising in Mexican market food. The menu is a feast of burritos, tacos, tostadas and more, washed down with so many tequila choices. The chocolate y churros, which I've had in Spain, came with the sugar-and-cinnamon-dusted churros (dough fritters) piled on a platter, with the chocolate in a tiny cup. The churros were as they should be: crisp and piping hot. But the chocolate: oh wow! Rich, dark, molten and high in cocoa solids. After the churros were gone, I ate some with a spoon. Thanks for that, Natalie, and much more...
Mystery chutney: We went to a new Pakistani restaurant, and the food was all good. What made an excellent first impression was a chutney that came with the poppadums: it tasted like mashed peach and banana, with a hint of citrus tang and a light spicing. Unexpectedly yummy.
